Twitter uptake statistics - explosive growth in 2009
So we’ve identified 7,939 Irish twitter users, through various methodologies. Obviously the term “Irish” can be subjective; in general we have included first generation Irish-born people who live overseas, either temporarily, permanently or indefinitely. Our policy is to exclude second generation Irish who do not live in the country and do not exhibit an tendency to write about Irish-related topics (again subjective). We also include non-Irish who are currently living in Ireland, either temporarily or permanently, except where they seem to have no Irish connections (or do not converse with Irish people) or do not discuss Irish-related topics (again subjective), particularly if such communication is in a foreign language (although foreign language on its own does not exclude). Having said all that, the vast majority of Twitters marked as Irish in our list are Irish / Northern Irish, based in Ireland.
Of the identified we are currently aggregating posts from 4249 distinct authors…so if you want to be included all you have to do is follow @irishblogs (you can always unfollow later and we will not take umbrage).
RATE OF UPTAKE OF IRISH TWITTER ACCOUNTS:
The first graph shows how many Irish Twitter accounts were set up in each quarter since the first account in our records. As you can see there has been a significant jump since quarter 2 in 2008. Also it is important to note that Q1 in 2009 only reflects figures up to 7th Feb - so it would appear there has been explosive growth in 2009.
CUMULATIVE IRISH TWITTER ACCOUNTS OVER TIME:
The second graph shows the cumulative number of accounts that were in place at a particular interval in time (i.e. the total at that time). Note, it does not take into account accounts that may have been deleted i.e. if an account was created and then deleted, it would not appear in this graph. Also the fact that Q1 in 2009 is only 6 weeks out of 13 weeks then the end of the curve would be even steeper giving it an accentuated exponential shape

The truth of it is probably less nice - it’s people staying in more and using the internet for cheap entertainment because of the recession.

Interesting, although we have since learned that loads of people sign up and abandon ship straight away.

It’s an exponential growth rate. I wonder how much benefit people have had from it, at least if they’re using it for business?
